Ok, so I went into this movie pretty blind. I vaguely knew what It was about. I've never read the books and I only went because everyone was flipping out about it. It took a LONG time for me to get into this movie. The odd hair and make-up got a little tiring after a while. The premise of this story is pretty freaking barbaric...and far fetched. Really? in the not-too-distant future will the Government really let 24 young kids brutally fight each other to the death? If that's what's coming for our kids etc...I don't know what i'd do.
But, It's a movie. Just a movie. Anyways, after all the freaky make-up and hair they finally battled. I have to say, this part was pretty good. Jennifer Lawrence did a great job in these sequences. This movie kinda reminded me of "The Truman Show". A futuristic, barbaric version of it. The whole stadium where they fight is pretty much all computer simulated, and the president, or whoever can design it so that they can pick out who to kill. That part annoyed me to no end. It's supposed to be Kid vs. Kid, not Kid vs. Kid vs. computer geek. They have it rough enough having to put up with each other.
(OK IF YOU DON'T WANT ME TO SPOIL IT FOR YOU, DON'T READ THE NEXT PARAGRAPH!)
One part that struck a cord is when Rue (sp?) the little girl who gets attached to Katniss, gets killed. I admit, I actually cried. I was JUST starting to love this cute little kid when she gets it in the stomach! Again, Jennifer Lawrence's performance was great. Speaking of her, I think if it wasn't for her acting ability it would have SUCKED! I mean, It already isn't that great, but if she didn't get the role, it would have been doomed.
(OK YOU CAN READ THE REST NOW! :P)
Overall, The Hunger Games left me still hungry for something. There was something hollow about it, I don't know what. I liked it, but it wasn't great. Maybe i'm getting too old to watch kids fight to the death, even if it is just a movie. The romance was hollow, and didn't seem believable. I won't be buying this movie on DVD, s'all i'm saying.
out of 10, I give it a solid 6.5
